About the Cabin
Bed and Wood Stove
wood stove
The cabin is heated through passive-solar gain and a wood burning stove. If necessary, a staff member will show you how to build and maintain a fire in a wood stove. Here is a short video with instructions on how to use a wood stove. Your cabin is equipped with fire starter blocks, kindling and firewood for the stove, as well as fire-proof gloves and metal implements for tending the fire and disposing of ash. An ax and hatchet are provided in case you need to prepare additional kindling or firewood.
When you need to remove ash, do so from the tray beneath the stove to the metal can in your cabin after the fire has gone out and the ash has cooled. Once the ash is completely cold you may move it outside to the plastic bucket by the cabin stairs.
solar and propane
The cabin is equipped with a solar panel and propane tanks. We have three solar powered lights. Two are located by the kitchen area and one is by the bed. There is an outlet to charge a cell phone.
Propane is used to fuel the two-burner stove and the refrigerator. The propane tanks are located in front of the cabin, under the porch. A staff member will instruct you in how to change one of the propane tanks should it run out during your stay. You will also be shown how to operate and restart, if necessary, the propane refrigerator.
Use matches provided in the cabin to light the propane burners on the cook-top. Should you have any problems with using the stove, refrigerator or changing propane tanks, please contact the Blazing Mountain staff.
Water
There will be water at the cabin when you arrive. The water is tap water from the BMRC kitchen brought up in 3 and 5 gallon plastic jugs. A filtered water pitcher is available in the kitchen area of the cabin for you to filter your drinking water. A ceramic water cooler is provided that you can refill from the water jugs. This will provide you water for drinking and washing dishes. It is fine to pour soapy water down the drain of the sink.
Depending on the length of the retreat, you will want to establish a schedule for replenishing water to the cabin.
Toilet
There is a vault privy just to the south of the cabin. Toilet paper is located in the storage closet in the cabin. Please put used toilet paper in the wastebasket in the Privy instead of in the vault.
Showers
You may use the bathroom facilities in the Shrine Hall of Blazing Mountain Retreat Center, per a schedule to be developed with Blazing Mountain staff.
